Uncovering new potentials for AR in cities

In a new collaboration, 11 app developers, supported by Huawei, joined forces with Düsseldorf Tourism and the Digital Innovation Hub to unveil a cutting-edge tourism experience. Over two months from July to October 2020, they embarked on a mission to harness the power of Augmented Reality (AR) to redefine how tourists explore Düsseldorf.

By transforming 3D CAD data into 3D cloud models, the team paved the way for immersive AR visualizations that transcend traditional tourist experiences. The result? An app named "timeshift" that transports visitors through time, allowing them to seamlessly journey from one historical epoch to another with a simple swipe across their screens.

From the city's inception to its architectural evolution and even the devastation of World War II, timeshift brings history to life in unprecedented ways. Visitors can also interact with virtual characters, peer inside buildings, and even book attraction tickets directly through the app.

The project demonstrates the potential of AR in tourism, offering a glimpse into the future of immersive travel experiences. Whether it's gamified sightseeing, personalized restaurant recommendations, or seamless integration into local tourism apps, AR has the power to enrich and transform the way tourists engage with cities.

As Düsseldorf showcases its unique history and embraces the possibilities of the future, timeshift stands as a testament to the city's commitment to innovation and visitor experience. Explore the past, present, and future of Düsseldorf like never before with Augmented Reality.
